This week in my garden has been an exciting and productive time! After weeks of planning and preparation, I finally completed some major projects and made significant progress toward this season’s harvest. Here’s what happened:
Building the Raised Beds
The highlight of the week was finishing the construction of my raised garden beds. I have 2 beds that measure 8′ x 2′, 2 beds that measure 8′ x 2’7″, and 1 bed that measures 9’9″ x 2’7″, providing plenty of space for my vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Raised beds offer numerous benefits, including better drainage, improved soil quality, and easier maintenance. I’m thrilled to see them ready for planting!

Filling and Amending the Soil
Once the beds were built, I had soil delivered and filled each one to the brim. To ensure my plants thrive, I took the time to amend the soil with organic compost and other nutrients tailored to the needs of my crops, such as perlite, an all purpose fertilizer, and earthworm castings. A well-prepared growing medium is the foundation of a successful garden, and I’m confident that my plants will benefit from this extra care.

Fertilizing the Seedlings
My seedlings have been growing strong, and this week, I gave them a boost with an organic fertilizer. I used Liquid Crab and Lobster Shell and Fish and Seaweed Fertilizer. This step is essential to provide the young plants with the nutrients they need to establish healthy roots and foliage. Watching these tiny plants grow is one of my favorite parts of gardening!
Planting Strawberry Roots
This week in my garden, I also planted strawberry roots from two different companies. This will be an interesting experiment to compare the quality and yield of each variety. Before I planted each strawberry root I placed some Berry Tone, which is a type of fertilizer for berries, in each plant hole. Strawberries are a delightful addition to any garden, and I can’t wait to see which plants thrive the most.

Potatoes in Grow Bags
Another exciting task this week in my garden was planting potatoes in grow bags. I will be using 10-gallon grow bags, and I will be planting mainly Yukon Gold potatoes. Once again, the potatoes came from two different companies, so it will be interesting to see how they grow. One of the companies gave me extra potatoes. They gave me Clearwater Russets and French Fingerling potatoes. Grow bags are a fantastic solution for gardeners with limited space or those looking to rotate crops easily. They provide excellent drainage and aeration, helping to produce healthy tubers. I’m eager to see how these potatoes develop over the season.

Looking Ahead
With so much accomplished this week, I’m excited to see my garden take shape. The combination of raised beds, healthy soil, and carefully chosen plants sets the stage for a bountiful harvest. Next on my to-do list is to monitor the seedlings, water consistently, and prepare for planting even more crops in the coming weeks.
Thank you for joining me on this gardening journey! If you’re starting your own garden or have tips to share, I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Happy gardening!
